In conversation with... Janice Oliver

This spring, we dedicate a much-deserved column to Janice Oliver, who has just marked her 40th anniversary working with us at our Darlington store. We sat down to chat all things Barker and Stonehouse, and what forty years at the heart of the brand has meant to her.

Q. Can you remember your very first day at B&S?

A. I can, and I was so overwhelmed. Everyone was so friendly and so helpful though that everything about it was a lovely experience. I’d been out of work for seven years raising my two children, and so I was full of butterflies. The team helped me find my feet and I felt so lucky from day one.

Q. What’s been your ultimate career high?

A. There's been a few I have to say. I specialised in bedroom and I was asked to visit one of our factories in the south to help pick a new range of mattresses and that was such a compliment I thought. I’ve been asked to go help with new store launches too over the years to help train new staff. Harrogate was absolutely fabulous but Battersea was a very special moment. Q. What’s your all-time favourite product and why?

A. The Vi-spring Shetland divan – the ultimate in luxury.

Q. Tell us something that’ll surprise our customers about life at B&S?

A. Just how eco-friendly we try to make our stores. We’re on a real mission to get rid of all plastic and cut down our carbon footprint as much as possible!

Q. How would you describe the brand in three words?

A. Innovative. Creative. Luxurious.

Q. What’s the best thing about working for B&S?

A. The people. It makes me very emotional to say this out loud but they’re my family. We’re all very well looked after and we all look after each other. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked here so long.

Q. What does the future hold for you and B&S?

A: Reaching 40 years was a real milestone for me in November. I felt so inwardly happy and proud. I could never work for anyone else and so when the time comes, I’ll step away and start working on my bucket list. I want to go to the ballet, to go to Wimbledon and to do some of the Wainwright walks. When the time is right that is...
