Sweet Dreams Are Made of These
This spring at our Gateshead store, we unveiled a new collection of luxurious beds and mattresses from Enchanted House Beds, each one handmade in Devon. Ahead of the launch, we caught up with the company founder to talk all things artisanal and what goes into promising a perfect night’s sleep...
You’re makers of mattresses, divans and bedframes. What took you into the world of sleep?
“My background is firmly in bed-making. I’ve worked at a number of the leading bed and mattress brands in the country from Sprung Slumber to Vispring, and over the years have amassed all sorts of insights into the ingredients that really do make the most difference to a good night’s sleep. I wanted to take all that I’d learnt to make my very own range that were about those all-important ingredients and nothing else.”
Let’s start with mattresses. What makes yours so special?
“The single most special aspect to our mattresses has to be the hand teased Dartmoor wool. And it’s special for lots of reasons. Firstly, it’s very rare to find it in mattresses, and when you do, it’s typically only mattresses mid-way in the range and upwards. You’ll find it in every one of ours though.
Secondly, flock and family traceability. We’ve joined hands with our very own family-run farm who’ve bred Dartmoor sheep for over a hundred years. That means we know exactly where and from whom our fleece comes, down to the field and the flock.
And thirdly, our wool is incredibly sustainable. Not only is it natural and locally sourced to keep our carbon footprint small, but we treat the sheep and their fleece with kindness. We only shear sheep bred for wool, and we use only the highest quality blend of lengths. We wash and clean it in the UK and card it ourselves back in Devon, so it’s fluffed up to get the most out of every ounce. It’s the most comfortable core ingredient to sleep on that I’ve found.”
Is it just Dartmoor wool that you’ll find in your mattresses?
“You’ll find a lot of Dartmoor wool in ours (we hand-tease it, so there are more grams per square metre – and we pack a lot of it in every mattress) but there are various other fillings to be found too. From alpaca (also from Dartmoor), cotton and horsetail to cashmere and silk, the combination depends on which mattress you choose but you’ll be sleeping on a bed of the finest, natural fillings whichever you pick.”
Are your bedsteads, headboards and divans made locally too?
“Absolutely. We use a combination of slow-grown European hard and softwoods, that are all FSC certified, and we make everything in our Devon workshop. You won’t find any polyester fibre pads or foam in our beds either – we use only layers of cotton and wool wadding to pad our edges and even have dovetail joinery on our soft-close bed base drawers, like the sort you’d find on a good quality kitchen. We’re in the game of doing things properly and making furniture to last a lifetime.”
