Here at Barker and Stonehouse, we are privileged to work with some of the world’s greatest furniture designers, craftspeople and creatives. These innovators bring excitement via their ideas and their work results in beautiful furniture, accessories and fabrics that bring surprise and delight to all.
Pure Furniture is one such brand. Pure Furniture’s roots lie in Romania, a beautiful country in which expert craftspeople have experience and expertise working with the finest materials, whether it’s wood, metal or leather. The furniture is hand-finished which means that each and every item created has a unique look and feel.
We sat down with Pure Furniture CEO, Nils, to find out more about the brand.
Q. What is the history of Pure Furniture?
A. I co-founded Pure Furniture in 2002 along with two friends, Roland van Dooren and Alberto Nervo. We each had fathers who ran furniture businesses, so you could say it was in our blood.
We shared a passion for craftsmanship, raw materials and a love of furniture with a history.
In the early years, we made wooden tables and cabinets and as the company grew, we branched out into chairs and lighting.
Whilst the business has grown, we remain committed to our founding mission – to create high-quality furniture from the finest materials.
Q. How do you source inspiration for the designs?
A. Our pieces are inspired by the past but with a contemporary twist. The design process is collaborative, involving myself, Roland, Alberto and our design team.
We source inspiration from across the globe, often taking our cue from classic furniture designs found at antique markets or online auctions.
We add a modern spin to these, taking note of current trends we spot at trade fairs.
Above all, we always stay true to our signature style – rustic, timeless and characterful furniture with plenty of personality.
Q. Can you tell us more about the provenance of the materials?
A. Our tables and cabinets are crafted from the highest quality oak, whilst our chairs are made from the finest ash and beech.
The beech and oak are sourced from Romanian forests local to our factory. These tree species are known for their interesting details and vivid character.
We craft these materials into furniture using state-of-the-art machinery at our factory before the furniture is hand-finished by our team of expert craftspeople.
Q. Can you tell us more about the craftsmanship and hand finishing process?
A. We are renowned for creating unique finishes by hand. For example, we finish our Oberon dining table by applying iron oxide which reacts with the tannins in the oak.
This results in a finish which is not a uniform colour but a gradient, depending on the level of tannin in different parts of the wood, so no two tables are the same.
This means we can produce one-of-a-kind pieces in volume so our customers can purchase unique furniture at reasonable price points.
Our Pure Furniture collections have been refreshed for spring 2024, with exciting new pieces, offering everything you need to create a beautiful and inviting home.
