At the heart of herdysleep, lies the humble Herdwick sheep. A breed native to the Lake District, Herdwicks are one of the only breeds that can survive on England’s highest mountains, reaching heady climbs of over 3,000 feet.
As well as being very cute, they are extremely hardy (one of the hardiest of all Britain’s sheep in fact) and have been farmed the same way on the Lake District fells for generations. The breed was also a firm favourite of children’s author Beatrix Potter who kept award-winning Herdwick sheep in the latter half of her life.
At least one full Herdwick fleece goes into a Herdysleep mattress, thanks to the hardworking fell farmers of the Lake District. Sadly, farming these sheep for their wool is no longer as sustainable as it once was, due to falling fleece prices – but Herdysleep are proudly committed to keeping the trade alive, and that's why they pay these farmers an above-market rate for their precious fleece. This means that each person who sleeps on a luxurious Herdysleep mattress can rest even easier, knowing that they have helped to support the Herdwick sheep and their fantastic farmers.
Carefully constructed in Yorkshire, Herdysleep mattresses benefit from local quality craftsmanship. Using artisan expertise in each stage, their highly-skilled mattress makers employ traditional techniques that have been refined over many years.
From the weaving of the chemical-free fabric coverings to the hand-tufted finish, every element is treated with comfort in mind, whilst continuing the legacy of time-honoured methods
