Crystal has become the common term for plates of high-quality glass that have perfectly specular flat faces. This is achieved by using a technique called the “float” process, during which the molten glass is poured from straight the furnace directly onto a bath of molten tin. The glass then floats on the surface until it transforms into a ribbon with parallel faces.
