Say hello to Loop, the world’s first
100% recyclable mattresses

In the UK, more than 100,000 mattresses are incinerated or sent to landfill every week. That’s a shocking figure, and if the mattresses were placed end to end, it equates to a length of 200kms. Clearly something’s got to change. And now it has. Following a product development collaboration spanning two years, Barker and Stonehouse managing director, James Barker, and inventor and innovator, Simon Spinks, have combined their talents, insights and ideas to deliver the world’s first 100% recyclable mattresses.

Everything in the natural world ultimately forms a loop of nature. Just so, each of our Loop mattresses will also be capable of being endlessly recyclable. That is the great breakthrough of this product innovation: the steel springs, the fabrics and all other components are all 100% recyclable, meaning no more mattress landfill.

GEORGE BARKER: Simon, you are known within the industry as a problem solver and inventor, having already developed a unique spring system that’s used around the world. Following your lengthy collaboration with my father, James, you now have a new innovation to share. Tell us what’s unique about the Loop mattress.

SIMON SPRINKS: This mattress is 100% recyclable. Achieving this, whilst also ensuring luxurious comfort levels, have been mine and James’ two nonnegotiable elements of the product development process.

Every single component can be recycled and remade, and it has none of the glues, foam or chemicals that you’d find in many other mattresses. This makes the mattress better for people as well as the environment.

We’ve focused on high-quality materials that can be recycled and reused again and again. For example, we designed glue-free spring units made from recyclable steel. We specifically chose steel because it’s one of the most recyclable materials on earth, able to be taken apart and reused for years to come. That’s also the case with the fabrics and fillings we’ve chosen – once the mattress has come to the end of its life, customers can simply send it to us to be taken apart and recycled.

THE MATTRESS IS DELIVERED ROLLED. HOW DOES THIS MAKE IT MORE SUSTAINABLE? Designing the mattress to be rolled before it comes to the customers means that you can literally transport and deliver twice as many as a flat mattress on one van load. This also halves the environmental impact and is, in fact, much easier to manoeuvre up stair cases – making it an easier option for the customer, too.

IS THE LOOP AS COMFORTABLE AS TRADITIONAL MATTRESSES? The best thing about the Loop mattress is that it’s still every bit the luxurious mattress you’d want and expect. We’ve combined cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship to offer longlasting comfort.

HOW IMPORTANT IS BRITISH MANUFACTURING TO HARRISON SPINKS? I know that your father, James, is right behind British manufacturing and so are we. We employ nearly 600 people at our Yorkshire base. Having a team right here in the UK, working with a local supply chain and upholding the traditions and values of this family business is very important to us, especially when it comes to developing and innovating with new products.

ARE YOU WORKING ON ANYTHING ELSE? Our mantra as a business is to be leaders in sustainable comfort and innovation. Watch this space for more innovative, sustainable solutions in the future
