March is National Bed Month, the perfect time to update your sleep space for spring and improve your sleep. National Bed Month was established by The Sleep Council and The National Bed foundation to shine light on the importance of having a good bed and how it impacts our sleep.
The Impact of bad sleep
Poor sleep can be detrimental to our health, leading to a risk of problems.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “Not getting enough sleep is linked with many chronic diseases and conditions—such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression—that threaten our nation’s health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to motor vehicle crashes and mistakes at work, which cause a lot of injury and disability each year.”
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, so it is important to consider quality and features when buying products to improve our sleep space.
1. Invest in a quality bed frame
You should invest as much as you can afford in a quality frame to ensure a perfect night’s sleep! A better constructed bed gives better support and comfort, and higher quality lasts longer.
From solid wood frames to divan beds with extra storage, there are a range of bed frames you can choose from depending on your needs and style.
Improve your sleep with a big bed frame
When searching for a new bed, re-arrange your space to see if you can fit a bigger bed frame. A big bed frame means more space and less sleep disturbance which leads to a better sleep!
A King Size bed will give you more space when you sleep, helping to prevent sleep disturbance.
If you do not have enough space for a King Size bed, a Double bed would also be an excellent choice!
2. Update your mattress
A sturdy bed frame is not the only thing you should consider when trying to improve your sleep space.
Studies have found that certain sleep surfaces have resulted in complaints of low back discomfort, pain, or stiffness and shoulder pain.
Other studies have found that the comfort and support of the sleep surface are related to problems of sleep quality and efficiency.
Are you suffering with lower back pain or lack of sleep due to sleep disturbances? It might be time to update your mattress!
Memory Foam
Memory Foam mattresses mould to your body to create a weightless, sinking-in sensation. Perfect for if you have painful joints.
Pocket Spring
A Pocket Spring mattress is great if you are shopping as a couple.
The springs in the mattress work independently of each other to distribute weight and reduce motion transfer, perfect for helping to prevent sleep disturbances from your partner.
Hybrid
Hybrid Mattresses bring together a combination of materials, from springs and foam to latex and gel. The combination of materials helps suit specific needs.

3. Declutter and Organise
Studies have shown that people who have cluttered bedrooms sleep worse than those who do not have clutter.
According to University Psychology Professor Pamela Thacher :
“Poor sleep is known to compromise cognition generally. So, if hoarders have cluttered/unusable bedrooms (and less comfortable, functional beds), any existing risk for cognitive dysfunction, depression, and stress may increase as sleep quality worsens.”
Combat your cluttered room and create a serene atmosphere by adding some smart storage solutions to your bedroom oasis.
Storage for small bedrooms
If you are looking for something small that could fit into a compact room or space, a bedside cabinet may just be what you are looking for. Complete with spacious drawers, the size of a bedroom storage cabinet means it can fit in a snug area and you can still have optimal storage.
A bedside cabinet can also be doubled up as a bedside table.
Large Storage
If you have a big, cluttered bedroom, a wardrobe may be the right option for you. There are wardrobes with built in storage, perfect for keeping you organised and decluttered.
4. Introduce relaxing colours
Enhance your sleep environment by introducing relaxing colours to help you get a good night’s rest.
Blue
Green
Green can evoke feelings of happiness and comfort. On trend, green is an excellent choice for introducing relaxing colours to your bedroom.
White
White may be a good option as it stimulates the brain less than some colours do. Try introducing more neutral colours into your sleep space. You can find plenty of accessories and lighting that incorporate neutral colours like white.
5. Enhance lighting for relaxation
Unwind before bedtime by introducing ambient lighting to your sleep space.
Some experts recommend switching to warm lights instead of blue lights in the home before bed.
Warm hues of red, orange, and yellow are best for preparing your mind and body for sleep.
According to sleep Physician, Dr Pranshu Adavadkar: “If you need light, choose warm colours like red or amber. Avoid blue light from electronic devices as it can trick your brain into thinking it is still daytime and disrupt your sleep-wake cycle.”
There are a range of lighting options available to choose from.
Table Lamps
For something small that can fit on your bedside cabinet or chest of drawers, a table lamp would be a great option. There are several styles to choose from when looking for table lamps: wooden, ceramic, glass, and rattan lamps. Whatever your style, a Table Lamp is a great option for introducing warmth and character to your bedroom.
Floor Lamps
A floor lamp would be perfect if you are looking for a big light that can stand in reach of your bedside for easy switching on and off.
If you are looking to introduce a floor lamp to your room, there are a range of choices, everything from brass to glass and wooden floor lamps.
With a range of styles, there is a floor lamp for everyone.
