How to Design A Hotel Style Bedroom

If you’ve ever spent the night in a luxury hotel suite, you’ll know that you can’t beat their quality comfort and beautiful designs. The unfortunate part is that they’re only temporary, and you can’t get that great night’s sleep in a beautiful bedroom forever. Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can recreate the look of a five-star room at home, without needing the budget of a top establishment.

Our guide is full of hotel bedroom ideas and will give you all the design tips you need to transform your room into a stylish suite fit for a VIP. From colour palette advice to décor ideas, we’ve put together a list of everything you need to nail the hotel aesthetic at home.

Finding the right colour palette

One of the signature details that gives luxury hotels their appeal is a carefully planned colour palette. You’ll often see neutral colour schemes being used in suites because they’re widely agreeable and won’t divide their guests, but they also offer a calm, clean atmosphere. These colour combinations are classics of the hospitality industry, and you can use them to your advantage when styling your own home:

Off-whites

Bright neutral tones are the foundation of most hotel rooms. They can help light up a room while adding a touch of warmth to your palette, and they’re easy to pair with a range of other shades. Cream, eggshell, and light grey all provide great foundations for hotel-style bedrooms, so consider painting your walls with these colours to give the rest of your design a simple but appealing backdrop.

Sage green

Sage green has been one of the top trending colours in interior design over the last few years, but its earthy tones and calming feel are a fantastic fit for hotel bedrooms in particular. Since it blends so effortlessly with neutral palettes, we've seen plenty of luxury rooms start to incorporate sage green into their designs, as it’s a reliably strong accent colour that doesn’t overwhelm your palette. Try working it into your room through soft furnishings and wall décor for a natural, soothing element.

Navy blue

If airy neutrals don’t fit your plans, you can also try working a dark shade like navy blue into your design. Known for its regal look and versatility, it can add extra depth to your interior when used in moderation, or it can give your room an elegant feel when used as your main shade. Try adding navy furnishings in a room with a white palette for an eye-catching colour highlight, or choose décor with navy accents to break up the brightness of a neutrally painted room.

Maximise your space with fitted storage

When you walk into a luxury hotel suite, you’ll see everything perfectly arranged to avoid visual clutter. While you probably don’t have access to a professional cleaning service at your home every day, you can still cut down on distractions with integrated storage. Try adding fitted wardrobes and cupboards to your room, blending perfectly into your walls to keep your loose items tucked away without taking up floor space.

You can also work storage solutions into your other furniture, such as your bed or tables, to keep your room looking neat. If you have spare bedding or towels on hand, try folding them neatly in square piles to help emulate the hotel experience.

Side tables can also be used as small storage units, and there are several ways you can style them to your advantage to give your room the feel of a hotel getaway. Try adding bedside lamps and accent lighting to your side tables to give your room a layered look, or for larger storage, substitute them for a bedside chest and drawers instead.

Enjoy a five-star sleep in a king-size bed

No hotel bedroom is complete without a luxurious bed to sleep the night away. If you’re going to give your room the feel of a five-star suite, you’ll need to invest in quality comfort, and there’s no better way to achieve the effect of a classic hotel than with a king-size bed.

The bed serves as the main centrepiece for most hotel suites, so if you’re planning on taking inspiration for your room, you shouldn’t cut corners on your options here. Aim for a luxurious mattress with quality bedding, such as a fitted sheet, duvet cover, and extra fluffy pillows. You may also want to slightly oversize your duvet to make your bed look even more comfortable and inviting.

Use your walls as decoration opportunities

The walls of your hotel-style bedroom deserve just as much love and attention as the rest of your design. There are a number of ways you can break up the monotony of plain walls to give your interior some added personality. Why not choose a bold wallpaper pattern to create a statement wall that contrasts against the rest of your suite, or give your room an ornate feel by finishing the look with added panelling? For smaller hotel-style bedrooms, you can also try adding a large wall mirror to give the illusion of extra space.

Give your bed a stylish headboard

Not only do headboards give you added comfort for a great night’s sleep, but they can also draw attention to your bed, making it a focal point of your room. Your headboard design should be eye-catching without clashing against the rest of your colour palette. This will help to add to your room’s luxury feel, while also giving it a unique identity, as many hotels choose signature headboards that allow their suites to stand out from their competitors.

Turn clutter into décor with a trinket tray

While hotel rooms typically focus on getting rid of any loose clutter, some of your items are best left out if they add to your décor or if they’ll see a lot of use. You can try reframing this clutter as an intentional part of your design by adding a trinket tray to your table or chest of drawers. Try filling your tray with items you’d like to keep on display for an opulent look, such as any jewellery or small antiques. You can also try using a trinket tray to organise things like toiletries or stationery, which will help to keep your bedroom looking neatly arranged.

Get rid of creases

To really lean into the hotel aesthetic, you’ll want your bed to look as well-kept and tidy as possible. This means getting rid of any creases and using straight lines and angles when arranging your bedspread. Use an iron to get rid of any folds in your bedding, and make sure any duvet covers and throws are perfectly lined up, or even tucked into your bed frame for the ultimate uniform look.

Choose your textures wisely

Hotel decorations are all about sumptuous fabrics and cosy cushions, so try to vary your textures to get the most out of your relaxation. Try taking a note from Nordic-inspired bedrooms with faux fur accessories, or give your bedding a pillowy finishing touch with a plush throw. You can even try varying the texture of your flooring by adding a shaggy rug for a warm underfoot feeling.

Give your room a signature scent

The best hotel rooms engage all your senses to make you feel truly at home, so why not add scented candles or air fresheners to your bedroom to give it a comforting aroma? You could even try layering scents to give your hotel-inspired bedroom its own palette of fragrances that will set it apart from other designs. Fresh smells like lavender and vanilla are often popular in hotels, but consider experimenting with your own favourite scents to find the perfect fit for your room.

With these hotel bedroom ideas in mind, you should hopefully have all you need to turn your room into the escape of your dreams. If you’re looking for more bedroom décor inspiration, you can read our blog for other design guides, such as our tips on styling a beautiful bedroom on a budget.
