Gathering with Friends: Sally Worts

The festive season is upon us and this year, we’re making up for lost time. Whether you’re hosting extended family or spending the season with your closest friends, join us in celebrating all that makes gathering with our loved ones so great.

From the festive feast that brings everyone together around the table, to the decades-old traditions that you get excited about year after year, Christmas has always been special – but we have a feeling that this one is going be even more magical.

In preparation for the big day, we had a good old natter with some of the designers and influencers we’ve loved working with over the past year, to find out how they’ll be spending Christmas.

Perhaps you’ll take some inspiration from their plans or simply enjoy hearing a how others spend their day – either way, you’re cordially invited to our festive gathering with friends…

Season’s greetings with Sally Worts @sallydoessassy

We first met interior stylist Sally Worts earlier this year when she let us use her garden for one of our outdoor furniture shoots.

We fell in love with her daringly dark colour palette, maximalist approach to pattern and eclectic artworks and accessories – and couldn’t wait to find out how she styles her space for the holidays…

Bold and beautiful or a little more understated? Let’s find out how Sally does Christmas…

How would you describe your festive style?

My home is pretty “blingy” all year round so in the run up to Christmas I tend to just throw a bit more gold at it. I’m very much from the school of thought that more is more and especially at Christmas time. There will definitely be gold tinsel!

Christmas tree: real or fake?

Real and as large as possible. I may even get two this year!

One will be decorated with every single decoration we have ever had and will include homemade ones from when the boys were small and even some from when I was a little girl. It’s full of memories and not at all Insta worthy. And I may decorate another with just ribbons and twinkly lights.

What will Christmas look like for you and your family this year?

Well, I’m ridiculously happy to say that we will have a full house this year. All four boys, their partners and my Dad will be here over the festive period. It will be noisy and messy with lots of brotherly banter.

Do you have any fun/unusual Christmas traditions?

When our four boys were very little, I fancied us all making a popcorn garland to go on the tree. It soon became very clear that small fingers can’t thread popcorn onto a wire. So, not to be outdone, I went to the cupboard and got a box of Cheerios breakfast cereal (it has holes in the middle), and they sat there for hours threading them onto the wire which we used as a garland on the tree. We still do it every year (and the oldest is now 25!)

How do you handle the influx of extra guests? Will you all fit around the table?

We will. We are a big family so the table is plenty big enough and we will bring in one of the benches from outside to go along one side of the table for extra seating. I kind of enjoy having to squeeze up to fit extra people around the table.

What will you be serving this Christmas?

Chris always does Christmas dinner and it’s delicious. It will be turkey with all the trimmings and more pigs in blankets than you can shake a stick at. There will also be veggie options and you can absolutely guarantee that we will forget to take the red cabbage out of the microwave – it happens every year.

Sprouts: love or hate?

Adore them.

What is your Christmas tipple?

A few glasses of fancy Champagne in the home bar before we eat our Christmas dinner and always a very cold glass of Sancerre with the meal.

What’s on your Christmas list this year?

I’m very into my garden so I hope to receive plant vouchers. I like the idea of receiving that as it’s a gift that will keep giving throughout the year as the flowers grow.

Favourite Christmas movie?

The Snowman.

It would be Christmas without…?

A tin of cheesy footballs.

What have been your highlights this year?

100% getting together with friends and family.

Any resolutions/goals for 2022?

I’m not one for making New Year’s resolutions I tend to just go with the flow.
