Trees4Trees - How We're Making A Difference

Sustainability and environmental impact are important issues in 2019 and they’re at the heart of everything we do. We’re the UK’s number one supplier of reclaimed wood furniture, with nearly 20% of our dining and bedroom ranges made from reclaimed wood. But did you know we’re also making a big difference to sustainable forestry and tree numbers?

Back in 2008, Barker and Stonehouse were delighted to provide funding and support for the launch of an amazing initiative; Trees 4 Trees.

What is Trees 4 Trees?

This ground breaking initiative is based in and around the forests of Indonesia and is leading the way for timber grown and sourced for furniture. For every tree used, an average of just over two more are planted. This means that the forest carries on being a sustainable source of timber for generation after generation.

What’s more, it has environmental benefits; the constant supply of new trees offsets the CO2 in the atmosphere and provides a vibrant eco-structure for the forest's flora and fauna. It also helps to prevent topsoil being washed away into rivers and lakes.

On top of this, Trees 4 Trees helps the local communities who sow, grow and harvest the trees to prosper. From free seedlings to expert training, farmers and their families in Indonesia can learn about sustainable forestry management and environmental welfare as well as making an income.

100,000 Trees Planted (and counting)

This year, Barker and Stonehouse have reached a landmark milestone in the Trees 4 Trees project; 100,000 trees planted since 2008.

Director James Barker marked the occasion by making a trip to the Trees 4 Trees site in Semarang, Indonesia. As well as touring the factory and checking out new product developments, he took the time to go on a Trees 4 Trees field visit and meet some of the people behind the program, receiving a warm welcome from the team and local tree growers. During his time in the forests, James was impressed with how the initiative had developed and amazed by the speed of growth of Mahogany and Albacia trees.

However, the highlight of the trip was when Trees 4 Trees presented Barker and Stonehouse with a trophy for the landmark 100,000 trees planted from 2008 to 2019. These trees will help to capture an estimated 26,750,000 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere during their lifetime and will help to reduce local poverty by supporting 1,589 local farming families.

We’re proud to be part of this amazing project and can’t wait to make even more of a difference as we plant more trees each year. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without our eco-conscious customers, who like us, want to do good and look good.
