One of the key trends picked out by Living Etc for summer 2012, shocking pink is a high impact colour which is fast becoming the colour-de-jour.

It’s fashion’s new colour crush too, with neon pink top of the list of the block brights that are everywhere on the high street this season.

The boldness of the shade by itself can seem a little intimidating. But when combined with neutral tones or natural materials like exposed brick or concrete, it can give interiors a punchy, modern look as opposed to the floaty feminine feel or bubblegum Barbie appearance more traditionally associated with the colour pink.

An easy way to turn a simple space into a room that makes a real statement is with hot pink accessories such as the Mimo lamp from Barker & Stonehouse. Its gorgeous dark hue and block colour encompassing the base and stand make it a cutting edge, stand out item.

Match it with a bright rug to provide a subtle continuity of the theme. This hand woven Fuschia Aster rug, made from luxurious 100% deep wool pile is gorgeous and offers a feminine feel with its modern floral print.

Alternatively you can bring a splash of vibrancy to a room with a block of colour on just one wall. I adore the Razzle Dazzle shade of paint from Benjamin Moore – not just for the fabulous name, but for the richness and quality of the hue. Combine with a paler, subtle colour on other walls to allow Razzle Dazzle to really shine, I love the Hint of Mint, Wedding Veil or Hydrangea from the same range.

Make sure that you team bold bright colours with plenty of neutral shades, so that the shocking shade isn’t too loud. For example, the stunning Moel sofa from Ligne Roset which can be made up in gold, brown or black Catala bull-hide, Oregan hide, Divina or Coda fabrics offers a bicolour interpretation. I love the unique shape of the back which is fanned like the corolla of a flower.

Opt for a neutral covering material on top of the footstool and corolla (the main back section of the settee), and a bright pink for the structure of the footstall and ‘inside’ covers of the settee, providing a subtle flash of colour and a truly modern and unique centerpiece for your living space.

Choose items that pick up the shade and continue the theme to integrate the colour into a room in a subtle yet stylish manner. The pink velvet box of this Voluspa candle is as fabulous as the candle itself, which is hand-poured and 100% beeswax. The Japanese Plum Bloom scent encompasses notes of silky plum blossom petals and ripe plum fruit, and is utterly divine.

So awaken your senses this spring with a splash of shocking pink – you’ll be surprised at how much you’ll love it, and how much others will too.
