Grey is having something of a moment. Thanks to a certain book and soon-to-launch film, the days of grey being considered dull and boring are long gone. The colour has sex appeal and this is certainly true when it comes to the world of interior design.
Monochrome has been a hot trend for some time but add grey into the mix alongside rustic wood finishes and chrome detailing, and you have something delighting new and altogether warmer.
This twist on modern minimalism is packed with attitude. Think slouchy sofas, statement storage and animal-inspired accessories, for a look that’s the ultimate in contemporary cool, but with comfort at its heart.
To start, get back to basics with your colour scheme such as plain white walls and bare floorboards; these provide the perfect backdrop for a grey colour palette.
We don’t want frills or fussiness, so strip back the clutter for a calming space that lets the shapes and contours of the furniture and accessories shine through.
The simple shape of the Brandon sofa with its thin squared arms and deep, comfy seat cushions is a great starting point. Its pale grey colour provides a good base for adding varying shades of grey cushions, throws and accessories. This Iblis slate cushion from Barker and Stonehouse adds a touch of luxury with its bold, geometric pattern and sumptuous feel.
Give depth to a monochrome palette by mixing up textures and materials in muted shades. The chunky finish of the large, grey knitted pouffe is perfect for this. It’s a cute option for providing additional seating and can also be used as a foot rest, but it looks great in its own right.
When it comes to wood, a rustic finish that highlights the grains and grooves is key. The Greenwich tables are perfect for this reason. By having all three tables clustered together as I have done for this room, their varying heights and sizes make an eye-catching alternative to a single, large coffee table.
The Baker tapered shelving rack with drawer is also great – its oak shelves and muted metallic frame provide the perfect industrial-meets-rustic edge. Metal accessories such as the funky wire magazine rack and Wiggin mirror complete the look.
So don’t be afraid to embrace grey into your life – it’s more exciting than you think!
