There’s a certain kind of style that never dates and changes only for the better. It’s like strawberries and cream and tennis in the summer, reliable, enjoyable, comforting and classic with a small ‘c’. Confidence is about not having to try too hard, so enjoy the fruits of the understated Plain English look.
This is one of my favourite looks for autumn/winter 2013 because there’s a purity and prettiness to it that makes it infinitely appealing.
Start with a neutral backdrop. A honey-coloured colour palette is incredibly versatile and always works well in any room. Paint walls a vanilla shade such as Little Green’s Creamerie and stick to wooden floors or carpets in a sand or beige hue.
Furniture should be restrained in style but provide real comfort. Mix occasional chairs with sofas with a slightly Georgian feel such as those with wooden-legs-and-castors. Barker and Stonehouse has the aptly named Sloane, an extra-large sofa with curved arms, and deep-filled fibre cushions, perfect for creating a quintessentially English look. The subtly striped loveseat from the same range provides the ideal accompaniment for this sophisticated look.
This soothing palette also works well to create a calm and cool office space, as it encourages you to develop an uncluttered easily liveable work space and reduces stress.
The beautiful Berkshire double pedestal desk and matching Swivel office chair is so pretty you’ll never want to clock-off. Accessorise the look with functional pieces such as baskets for storing files and papers, scented candles and a stylish clock and table lamp.
Finally, create an oasis of restful slumber with cream and light-coloured woods. The stunning St Lucia bedroom collection from Barker and Stonehouse is crafted from mango wood for a distinctive colour and finish. Look for Bateau Lit style beds such as the St Lucia Sleigh version, or plump for an upholstered bed like the Windermere in light American oak. Whichever you choose, dress the bed in pure white bedlinen and add plenty of pillows and scatter cushions for a luxurious look.
Keep lighting subtle, with glass based lamps with cream shades, and add finishing touches such as fresh lemon-coloured flowers in simple glass vases – carnations or roses would work well in this setting.
