When Pantone chose Radiant Orchid as its Colour of the Year for 2014, it was a cheery start to the year.
It’s a colour that’s easy to love. As Pantone says: “Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination.”
Now, that’s my idea of a vibrant colour! However, as with all statement shades, Orchid needs to be handled with care. Because it’s a strong element, overuse can make it overwhelming – but just the right amount can lift your room incredibly.
Mix and match Orchid with closely-related shades such as fuchsia and damson on selected pieces to draw the eye and create focal points in your room.
You can see how well this works with Barker and Stonehouse’s Felicity sofa, which looks divine in softly-textured velvet with contrasting scatter cushions. I love the large seats – great for snuggling – and the chunky little wooden block feet.
A contrast in style but a sister in colour, the Alverton Accent Chair gives traditional looks a twist with a two-tone velvet fabric that’s currant on the outside and damson on the inside. Teamed with its beautiful curved high back and shapely legs, the chair is an absolute picture – and it comes with an optional lumbar support cushion in pretty Park Lane fabric.
Another piece to delight the eye is the Hepburn small footstool. Finished in a vintage-style moleskin and deep-buttoned in damson, it looks a bit like a delicious fruit, but a very comfortable one! The strong lines and vibrant hue lift it way out of the ordinary, and it would add a pop of interest to any room setting.
Comfort is also the keyword with the Stressless Dream recliner chair, which comes with its own freestanding footstool. The chair is upholstered in a luscious dark variation on Orchid, upholstered in luxurious Paloma leather and designed to give you the sense of peace and tranquillity that Stressless is famous for.
But of course, tranquillity is not necessarily what springs to mind when you first see Radiant Orchid. In a block, it can be sizzling hot, creating a sense of excitement in a décor.
The Jonte contemporary armchair is a stunning fuchsia variant guaranteed to add a zing in your interior style. Balanced on super-slim yet sturdy chrome legs, it comes with or without arms and puts a special stylish twist on your dining arrangements. I’d team it with glass or wood to create textural variety and an element of surprise.
The range of effects you can create with Radiant Orchid is amazing, so I completely agree with Pantone that the colour has a magic all of its own. Orchid, you could say, has really grown on me.
