With the festive season behind us, our homes can feel a little sad without the glitz of Christmas lights and decorations, and it’s easy to experience a post-Christmas slump. But the New Year brings with it new ideas and a fresh perspective, so it can be the perfect time to think about a new interior design scheme.
When the weather’s cold outside, it’s a great opportunity to flick through your favourite interiors magazines for inspiration and decorating tips.
As every designer knows, keeping a mood board or scrap book of ideas can really help to focus your creativity. Cut out pictures of furniture or room sets that you like from magazines, take photographs of places or objects which inspire you and create a collage that will crystallise your vision of how you want your home to look.
The New Year also brings a whole new season of fabulous trends and one of the biggest for 2015 is blue. Navy blue plays so well with other colours such as pink, cream, grey, coral and sage, and it makes a marvellous counterpoint to bright white.
Warm shades like navy, azure or cobalt are the perfect choice for sociable spaces like living and dining rooms, as they create a cosy, inviting feel, while retaining a feeling of elegance.
The plush velvet finish of the Azure sofa and chair from Barker and Stonehouse offers a sumptuous feel and is a great starting point for incorporating a deep blue into your living room.
Opt for a bright and breezy nautical theme with plenty of white, to provide a light and airy space that will really lift your spirits in the winter months. Add accessories that add to the nautical theme, such as the Rope Door Stop or Antique Cream Sails Yacht for a playful feel.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to completely redecorate a room, give it a lift with a few key accessories such as these Airforce Blue Short Neck Vases. They look great clustered together filled with beautiful blue hydrangeas, and combined with a number of other key blue accessories will make a big difference to a room.
A set of the Dime Tolix Square Bar Stools in blue will really funk up a breakfast bar or dining area; I love the industrial style and injection of colour they bring to a room.
Introduce a bold pattern to provide a striking focal point; a great way to do this is with a rug. The Frankie rug features repeating geometric squares that take twists and turns across the floor, creating an optical feast for the eyes.
With the variety of shades on offer in the blue colour palette, it’s definitely a colour that’s here to stay as an interior design trend.
