If you’re a lover of British design heritage and are brave enough to use bold colour in your bedroom, then this could be your next big decorating trick.
To achieve a New Gothic scheme opt for bold hues, pretty patterns, reclaimed materials and far-flung finds, for gothic style with a bohemian edge.
The trend for ‘Victoriana’ has been around for some time, with the return of classic furniture pieces, pretty botanical prints and curiosity-style accessories. This new take on the style is eccentric yet upscale – and will add instant drama and character.
This is ideal for Edwardian and Victorian homes – in particular those that still have some of their original period features – but it will still work in any home.
Strip back floorboards and cover with brightly-coloured rugs and paint walls in dark, moody hues as the starting point for your new gothic bedroom.
I’ve chosen a midnight blue for the back wall and hung a selection of salvaged mirrors in beautiful shapes to add interest – but a selection of mismatched picture frames would work equally as well.
A Victoriana-style iron bedstead is a must – and this Keeler Metal Bedframe with a vintage black finish is perfect. This sturdy bed is a classic design that will endure, sitting comfortably in different design schemes as you update your bedroom over the years.
Bright accent pillows bring a subtle boho vibe to the bed and a variety of bold hues and rich textiles offset the moody blue of the wall colour to lift the space.
I love this pretty butterfly print Papilio Flamingo Cushion, which nods to the trend for botanicals which was so favoured by the Victorians. Based on the Papilio fabric design from Amazilia, this colourful oblong cushion portrays a gathering of botanically-drawn butterflies with a sumptuous teal velvet reverse.
More is more with this look and multi-patterned prints complement one another instead of clashing. I’ve added the sumptuous Daphne Taupe Cushion with its beautiful floral design, and the Jade Round Cushion with Kantha Embroidery.
This look is all about mixing and matching new with old, and I’ve added a contemporary twist with the Charlie reclaimed bedroom furniture range. The contrasting colours and textures of the patina in this range add real interest and warmth. Throw in a further contemporary surprise with a quick flash of neon – I’ve added the funky Ikat Pouffe with its dazzling blue, pink and yellow hues.
Finish with quirky accessories – add colourful pieces like this Moulded Metal Candle Holder and display eccentric finds under this Wood, Glass and Rope Cloche for a ‘Victorian collector’ look.
