With the vagaries of the British weather, it’s no wonder that we Brits love a good conservatory, summer house or gazebo. And the rise in popularity of garden yurts and tipis offers even more options for us to spend as much of our summertime as possible outside, even without the balmy temperatures of the Med at our disposal.
Nothing beats having the doors wide open to the conservatory to really let the outside in, and by doing so, all the smells and sounds of summertime – from birds tweeting to the wafts of flowers blooming in the garden, indoor/outdoor living is the perfect match for the British Summertime.
There are some stunning ranges in indoor/outdoor furniture, but what does this really mean? Pieces that use the wickers and rattans that are ideal for a protected conservatory environment, but can also be taken outside to make the most of the good weather.
My pick of the best has to be the Harewood set. Its chunky kubu weave uses natural processes to get its grey finish – and what’s even better is that it’s 100% recyclable, making it kind to the environment as well as super-stylish.
The dark cushion covers in Surrey Grey give a sophisticated finish and the set of two and three-seater sofas make a perfect statement for a contemporary or rustic feel.
The Hyde square coffee table is the perfect match for this set, which uses untreated and recycled teak wood for a charmingly rustic feel, while also being ecologically sound. The iron legs add to the industrial chic style and give it a quirky edginess. Pick up on the feature with cast iron accessories such as lanterns or sculptures.
What’s great about this table is the shelf underneath, it’s perfect for storing all those magazines and books for lazy summertime reading, and achieving an uncluttered finish.
For a contemporary overhead light, the large iron fishing light continues the theme. Based on the lamps hung on the bridges of Greek fishing boats to light the way in the dark, this lamp makes a great focal point and adds to the indoor-outdoor vibe.
For when the sun does shine and we can venture outdoors completely, the Wisley set provides perfection in a patio space. Also made with a kubu weave and plump, foam-filled cushions, its sturdy frame and classic, chunky shape takes charge of a big outdoor area. The set comes in two and three seater sofas and an armchair, making a great complete collection that will endure in the style stakes. I love combining elegant patio furniture with a vast array of huge, potted plants and trees for a striking, contemporary outdoor space.
For staying outside just that little bit longer as the evening gets cooler, a warm comfy throw is the ultimate accessory. The Chalet Skye Check Throw is perfect to have on hand to snuggle into and enjoy the lighter evenings.
So whatever the weather, indoor/outdoor living is a great way to make the most of the British summertime.
