Around this time of year, many of us pay a visit to a grand and gorgeous country house and come away dreaming of how the other half lives.
We love that National Trust-type look, and no wonder – it’s classically elegant and has certainly proved the test of time.
It’s possible to bring elements of country house chic into our homes with a few of the right touches; you won’t end up with a stately home, but you will have a stylish one!
Classics are the name of the game and the Duresta Trafalgar sofa range is a perfect example. It is classic enough in shape to grace the most upmarket of drawing rooms, and is finished with touches such as proper castors and duck feather filling to the backs of the seats.
So far, so traditional, but the palette of the Fairport stripe is bang on trend – it’s striped combination of linen, gold and ivory provides inspiration for the whole room’s décor in their subtle shading.
A luxe leather armchair like the Timothy Oulton Branco would also fit right in. Inspired by a Georgian nursing chair, its scalloped edges and indulgent details of hand-applied studs and leather clad feet give it a luxurious finish.
A coffee table is the perfect complement to a sociable seating arrangement such as the grand one in our picture. But it should not be humdrum – the right coffee table can be a real focal point in a room, and will certainly be one of the most-used pieces of furniture.
That makes it a real investment, and tables such as the six-drawer Vincenne, with its warm walnut finish and useful storage, are both beautiful and practical.
The circular wine table, also from the Vincenne range, would work well at sofa side or in a corner; love those sculpted legs and high-gloss top…
To get the real country house look, choose muted heritage colours in chalky finishes for your walls, or hunt out damask wallpapers with a vintage feel. Floors can be stripped, with luscious traditional-style rugs, or thickly carpeted – comfort is the keynote.
Overhead lighting should indeed be a chandelier, if you have the ceiling height to make it practical. The Large Smoked Glass Chandelier with its glass droplets are wonderfully effective at creating sparkling light around the room.
Table lamps are another must and should be generously-sized to get the right look – the Hadley Ceramic Table Lamp not only has a classically-pleated shade, but its pretty cream base is finished in a crackle glaze to add that slightly distressed look that is all part and parcel of a stately home.
Add lavish floral arrangements in tall vases, a spritz of lavender polish and a pretty tea-set and you’ll be ready to meet your public – even if you might not quite get away with charging admission…
