There’s a rock and roll legend that Beach Boys composer Brian Wilson used to sit at his piano with his feet in a tray of sand to get an inspiring seaside feel for his music.

And at this time of year, you start to see why he might feel that way. Bringing a hint of the seashore into our homes conjures up gorgeous thoughts of sunny days, fresh air and a colour palette of bright blues and pebble hues.

So I’ve been on the hunt for marine-themed furniture and accessories that can make us feel beside the seaside in our own living rooms.

My first thought was of the driftwood we find on the waterline, beautifully distressed and sculptural – and the Willmore Mirror ticks all the boxes. It’s a real eye catcher and would make a focal point for any room.

Reclaimed wood is a huge trend and the Lewes Blanket Box, made from recycled pine, has a sundried wheat finish that looks suitably maritime. It’s a perfect storage accessory for any room.

The Beachcomber Clock made of wood and metal also fits perfectly with the theme – as does the quirky House-shaped Display Box for the wall that reminds me of lovely beach huts.

It wouldn’t be a maritime theme without touches of blue, of course, in all its shades from cobalt to navy and sky. Throws and cushions provide an excellent complement to stripped floors and pale, plain furniture, adding interest to the room and providing comfort. I love this Rustic Linen Cushion for its simple stripe and textured feel.

While this is a summer-inspired look, giving your decor a seaside vibe can also work well in winter. Because the look is packed with pale woodwork and bleached finishes, your room will seem full of light, and any darker days will seem brighter.

Accessories help in bringing out the blue, too – cluster glass bottles and vases such as the Airforce-Blue Short Neck Vase together on a shelf as a reminder of glass fishing floats, or deck a cream sofa with throws and cushions in soft blues.

Add the finishing touches with a Rope Doorstop and some tall candle lanterns or a ship-style pedant lamp create warming pools of light at night, and sit back to admire the castaway charm. It’s the perfect way to bring out your inner beach boy (or girl).
