An abundance of natural materials and calming, neutral colours is a big interior trend this year – and one that sits comfortably in any style of home.
From country cottage to warehouse apartment or Georgian townhouse, going ‘au naturel’ with your furniture and accessory choices will give a relaxed, welcoming feel to your home.
With this trend it’s the materials themselves that steal the show, with a distinctly minimalist design. But this doesn’t have to mean austere; comfort and luxury can be incorporated with plush, natural fabrics, giving everyday items a touch of extravagance.
A great example is this Billy Basket set of three woven rattan baskets that have been given a luxurious goat hide trim. This luxuriously fluffy, real Sheepskin Rug has a natural warmth and comfort and can be used as a rug or a throw.
Wood is a material that transcends design styles, from the rustic to the modern. Some of today’s most interesting decor finds showcase wood in all of its natural flair.
Reclaimed and reworked wooden furniture is great for giving a warm, relaxed feel – you don’t want anything too polished. The Aurora furniture range from Barker and Stonehouse offers a relaxed, country-style look with its versatile, neutral shade of buttermilk.
The Aurora Seven-drawer Chest with its natural driftwood surface adds to its rustic charm and looks wonderful furnished with simple accessories. For example, this simple Stone Effect Vase nails the trend for minimalist design that makes a bold statement.
When combined with the Freya Lantern, with its dulled copper-coloured handle and distressed iridescent finish, the overall effect is one of laid-back luxe.
In terms of walls, create a unique look with distressed plank panelling for a fabulous, textured backdrop, as I have done in this room set.
Now on to lighting; this beautiful Alexa Crystal Chandelier continues the theme with its beachcombed wooden shade and glass crystals. It will add real impact and pull the look together perfectly.
To prevent things from looking too serious, mix things up and add a few playful pieces like this wooden Horse Head. With its distressed white paint finish, the piece is in-keeping with the natural feel, but adds an element of fun – particularly when dressed with a straw hat!
When it comes to the living room, there’s a great range of sofas available with natural upholstery in soft, neutral shades. Opt for something enduring like the Sloane Sofa. It has a classic country feel while being the ultimate in comfort thanks to its plush, plump seating and feather-filled scatter cushions.
The beauty of going au naturel is that the pieces you pick simply won’t go out of fashion – opt for those that you love and make the look your own.
