It’s hard not to smile surrounded by candy colours and sunshine. Mix beautifully coloured sofas and chairs with more masculine desks, tables and accessories for the perfect retro blend.
An update on the summer’s ‘vintage candy’ look, this trend still incorporates the bright colours, the retro furniture and the vintage style, but there’s a greater emphasis on warmth and comfort.
Shape and colour are all important to this look. Sofas should be a little bit curvy and comfy while colours should be taken from the same tonal palette. You can go for brights or pastels but remember it’s always trickier to mix the two.
We like the Tula sofa from Barker and Stonehouse. A curvy little number in subtle grey with candy-coloured button-detailing, it’s perfect for pulling off the ‘modern vintage’ look.
A stripy rug is ideal for adding a pop of colour to any room, and Barker and Stonehouse’s Xian fresh stripe version is hand-tufted from 100% Japanese acrylic for a luxurious feel.
And whereas walls were painted in Verdigris or pastels during the summer months, now it’s time to give your walls a new lease of life with a warm mustard shade trimmed with a rich red border.
Use accessories to highlight the bold buttons, such as painted vases, sunny pendant lights like the BB1 Pendant light in yellow and printed scatter cushions like the Large Geometry cushions from Barker and Stonehouse.
A mix of light and dark woods, from ash to walnut, give the look a delightfully organic, collected-over-time appearance, but make sure the pieces complement each other to avoid it looking thrown-together.
The feminine and masculine juxtaposition combined with classic colours and graphic prints gives this trend the definition of modern vintage.
Continue the retro theme in the kitchen with 1950s style sorbet colours and block shapes, and then create a separate dining area with clever use of colour and layout.
A band of colour painted across a cream or white wall adds interest and reflects the stripes used in your soft furnishings.
In terms of furniture, an extending dining table, such as the Space, gives you the option to seat more diners without taking up valuable space and can be paired with a wide variety of dining chairs. We like the Anna oak and fabric chairs which come in a range of cool autumnal colours from taupe and mouse to fuchsia and lime.
Finish the look with a large wall clock and a bold piece of wallart.
