Six Ways to Make Your Home More Cosy This Winter

Wrapping up in your favourite jumper, snuggling under a blanket and and sipping on a hot chocolate...there's nothing better than getting cosy when its cold outside.

A warm and welcoming interior is essential for creating that homely Hygge-like atmosphere. Here are 6 simple changes that will make your home the perfect place to hibernate this winter.

Warm up your walls

It might not seem like the most obvious place to start, but a fresh lick of paint in the right colour will help to make your home feel a lot warmer. So, swap cold white walls for dark, deep colours that will transform your room into a cosy winter retreat. You don't have to go all out and paint every wall, even a single feature wall will create the desired results.

Traditionally, colours such as red and orange were used to bring warmth to an interior, but rich shades of navy blue, emerald green and dark grey are just as sumptuous and so on trend.

Increase your ambient lighting

The long dark nights of winter can often leave us feeling a little blue, which makes lighting one the most important interior in winter. Brighten up your home (and your mood) by adding a little extra ambient lighting to each room. Floor lamps are a quick and easy way to brighten up a dark corner, while a statement table lamp such as the Mercury Sphere Lamp will illuminate a room without the stark brightness of a ceiling light.

Alternatively, lanterns and candles will create a lovely glow on an evening.

Cover up cold floors

If you have tiled or wooden flooring in your home, you'll know that it can often feel cold and bare. While hard flooring is easy to clean and a convenient choice for families, it lacks that snugness of carpets once the cold nights draw in.

Adding a rug or two will create a cosier atmosphere and keep feet toasty in the depths of winter. From shaggy sheepskins to patterned wool designs such as the Amira Beige and Black Wool Rug, a new rug in your living room or bedroom will not only add warmth but will transform the look of a space.

Pile on the pillows and throws

Soft furnishings are essential when it comes to creating cosy vibes, so make sure your sofa is stocked up with an array of cushions and throws - perfect for sinking into after a long day. Layer them up in different fabrics, textures and colours; chunky knits and thick velvet fabrics are a popular choice for winter, while wool will add natural warmth.

You can make your living space as cosy as possible with wool and faux fur throws such as the Kilnsey Pure Wool Throw or the luxurious Silver Brown Faux Fur Throw, just the thing for snuggling under when the temperatures drops outside.

Introduce new aromas

Scents play a large part in how our homes feel, and the right aroma can help to create that perfect winter cosiness.

From candles and diffusers to scented room sprays, there are many ways to make your home smell great. Choose scents that are reminiscent of winter and the festive season, such as fir trees, clementines, cinnamon and gingerbread.

Create a restful retreat

Don't forget about your bedroom! One of the best things about winter is being cocooned in a comfy bed while it's freezing cold outside.

A great way to prepare your bedroom for the season is by switching light cotton bedding for something a little warmer, such as fleece or brushed cotton. Then, layer on an extra quilt or blanket to really increase the cosy factor.

With just a few small changes, you can transform your home into a snug sanctuary this winter. Discover our range of furniture and accessories for even more interior inspiration.
