Sensa Intelligent Pocket Springs
The latest piece of innovation at the heart of Somnus beds - This innovative technology ensures you always maintain the perfect sleeping posture.
Technological innovation is paramount to Somnus. It led to the invention of the double-tiered spring system back in 1924, a world first, and is what has driven Somnus to the latest piece of innovation at the heart of their beds: the Sensa Intelligent pocket spring system.
This innovative spring technology helps distribute the sleeper’s weight across a higher number of independent pocket springs, ensuring you always maintain the perfect sleeping posture. The springs help support your body more evenly and reduce pressure points, providing a more restful sleep.
Before they begin to make the high performance pocket springs, they make the wire that goes into them at their own on-site wire drawing facility in Leeds. They begin with steel rods and draw them into fine wire of different diameters. This makes the pocket springs lighter and more durable so that they can use up to 4,000 of them in each layer.
Established in 1840, Somnus has over 175 years’ experience creating luxury handmade beds and mattresses that are at the forefront of technological innovation. Every Somnus mattress is British by design: from the locally sourced natural upholstery fillings they use inside each pocket sprung mattress, to the British craftsmen that assemble them. It’s a traditional way of creating quality beds that they’ve kept alive for five generations – a tradition that always puts luxury and comfort first.
HERITAGE IN EVERY STITCH
When William Rhodes founded Somnus back in 1840, he wanted to make a very different kind of bed. Their dedication to this ideal has led to countless spring innovations over the last 175 years.

At Somnus, their craftsmen aren’t just bed experts, they are sleep specialists. Their team use traditional craftsmanship skills to produce a superior level of comfort in every one of Somnus beds.
Somnus are even striving to revive the art of weaving and bring the tradition back to Britain. They have invested in state of the art weaving looms for their Yorkshire based manufacturing facility with the intention being that they can weave the finest quality mattress fabric for their beds.
Not only are they moving the art of bed making forward, they’re bringing back the things that matter.
Sheep experts. Sleep designers
Somnus are committed to reducing their carbon footprint, growing their own resources locally and sourcing others close to home. They have their own farm in North Yorkshire, where they tend a very special flock of sheep and alpacas that are behind the Yorkshire Dales Eco Wool and alpaca fleece that you’ll find inside Somnus beds.
They also grow the flax and hemp crops on their Yorkshire farm, which are layered into there sumptuous mattresses. It is a sustainable approach that guarantees their blend of upholstery is always 100% natural, ensuring supreme breathability and temperature control.
