Our Battersea showroom occupies two floors in one of the most historic buildings south of the Thames – the old Candle Factory on York Road, Battersea.
It was in 1845 that Charles Farris first set up shop. He started as a grocer to the fashionable Kensington set but always had an ecclesiastical leaning. His stock of premium quality church candles proved so successful that he built a factory in Bishopsgate, in the heart of the City of London, and produced them himself.
Charles Farris died in 1923 but his Company went on to specialise in the production of handmade altar candles for churches and cathedrals and also made specific soaps and oils for its exclusive customers. In the late 1980’s it was acquired by Price’s candles for its exceptional products.
Richard Simpson bought Price’s candles in 1991 when searching for candles for the lighting company that he and Kevin McCloud had set up. When Richard sold Prices’s in 2001, he kept Charles Farris and the old candle factory. It was the Farris candles and its traditional values that had attracted him to Price’s in the first place. Subsequently, Richard saw an opportunity to bring its products to a wider audience. He kept the shop in Battersea and moved the factory to Mere in Wiltshire, England, where the business has continued to grow.
Our amazing building’s got more than a bit of history going on. Located on the site of the Old Candle Factory on York Road, the building has played a part in many royal lives.
Charles Farris holds a Royal Warrant as Chandlers to the Queen and the Royal Household and the company makes candles for all major state occasions including the funeral of Baroness Thatcher and the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
A stone’s throw away from both the inspirational showrooms on the Kings Road and sitting neatly beside the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, Battersea, is fast becoming a must-visit for its homes and interiors stores.
Away from the hustle and bustle of central London this south west hub offers a host of independent boutiques offering anything from period lighting to French furniture specialists and ever-trendy up-cyclers, all to be perused at your leisure.
The Barker & Stonehouse store is just a short walk from Clapham Junction and has 40 generously sized parking spaces if you’re planning on driving.
There are also plenty of local places of interest, the old Battersea Power Station, New Covent Garden Market, Battersea Park, Battersea Arts Centre and of course, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
